James Weldon Johnson
James Weldon Johnson was a teacher, lawyer, diplomat, and civil rights activist best known for writing the lyrics to "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing." He passed away in 1938 when his car was struck by a train at a railroad crossing on Route 1 in Wiscasset, Maine, while he was returning from a vacation on the Maine coast.
