Maine: From District to Statehood

Maine celebrated its bicentennial in 2020. The journey toward statehood began in 1819 when voters approved the separation from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. After this vote, the residents of the District of Maine had to take additional steps to achieve statehood. They were required to draft a constitution, which needed to be accepted by the people of Maine, and to seek Congressional approval for admission to the Union as the 23rd state.
